It is a silly name, created by an huffy and angry kid.

Seriously? I don't understand what they're trying to accomplish with that at all...

Guess there's some similar logic involved as in "making a statement about hacking" by doing a denial of service on an completely innocent community...
Well, it looks like it's just some script kiddie trying to show how cool he is. None of the videos he had on Youtube were hacking, they were just downloaded scripts that he ran.

Names have power. They can hurt, they can build up, they can unite, and they can divide. "Geekwhack" was a name created by the ever so beloved Ripster to diminish and mock a community and drive a wedge between two communities in order to continue his hatred of GH and to further indoctrinate his fanboys into his hatred. It's something that drives communities apart because of one bitter old man's petty grudge.

yes its just a name, a silly name, arent we all meant to be adults here? I'm both a geekhacker and a redditor and primarily i dont care if someone calls another community a name, its quite funny to be honest, i'm just being neutral though.

Why is something as frivolous as a hobby website the object of such hatred, anyway?

He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
He who sins a hell of a lot less can probably cast a stone or two every once and a while

I guess people can be pretty bitter about stuff sometimes? I can't think of any other reason frankly

Since the kid who did this is now admitting it was done in error I wish iMav would bring GH back up so we can all just get on as normal. I really hope we don't have to wait all weekend to get it back up.

webwit wrote: That script seems a bit peculiar, I was expecting something more sophisticated. That's no DDoS, but a stupid one-on-one wrestling match. I hope his cheap ISP router didn't catch fire. Such a silly attack shouldn't be getting past any firewall.

<snip>
That's the confusing part to me - these kinds of attacks can be easily mitigated with any modern firewall. It's not even a syn flood, and if other ec2 instances are being spun up to do this, then just block the whole of aws with something like this.

Certainly not a 'massive ddos' (from the looks of it), which is much more difficult to mitigate, but also rather more difficult to pull off since it requires access to something like a botnet.

Looks like the "we" is a 12 year old complete and total idiot, a wanker script kiddie who can only run extremely lame scripts made by other wankers and has no real technical knowledge of what he's running, knowledge of what he's attacking or knowledge of the law. And that geekhack's famously strict firewall must have been asleep, because the whole point of his video was that he ran the single IP number origin script, and then geekhack went down. If you proudly show yourself running such a lame script, you are not sophisticated enough to have a botnet. Maybe one or two other EC2 instances or idiot friends.

Someone should make a note of the IP of the server used to perform the DDoS and contact Amazon to complain. Amazon have a no-tolerance policy on people being dicks on their VMs.

http://portal.aws.amazon.com/gp/aws/htm ... _ec2_abuse

They could then have their AWS account shut down. 100% worth it.

Likely AWS free tier is being used, or a compromised AWS account (not unlikely). If said person actually gave their credit card to amazon however (which is fairly silly) for the free tier, it'd be obviously easy to track assuming the IP got logged...

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. The script kiddie stopped running his silly perl script some time ago, and still GH is down.

Now for some philosophy. Become victim of amateur denial of service attack. Bring down server for days to prevent attack. Who wins?

You still need to provide a valid card for the free tier. It doesn't seem like the person writing this comment and making this video is in a position to compromise anyone's AWS account.

From what I've seen, it was a DDoS but I can't confirm it. It was sent from an Amazon EC2 server. Geekhack posted this info:

Then, from Reddit, I've found this info:

And the video that people have been discussing:

And finally, the "ultimatum" that was given to GH because they are hating on him for DDoSing the site:

You don't seem to realize what the first D stands for.

Just out of interest, how much more resilient are we likely to be from this kind of malarkey?

I'm pleased i have nothing whatsoever to do with it! Believe me, that is good news for us all.

Haha, this resurrected thread has comments on how "reddit noobs" spoiled GH. Ran into another much older thread on DT about how even before that GH was spoiled by OCN noobs. Guess some things happen again and again.

There will always be new people. Some of them stay interested and eventually become more knowledgeable. Not that I'm disputing the fact that communities can change....

Yeah, that's one of my pet peeves. There's no opportunity wasted to bash the other communities.

Though, I'm not sure it that's a common thing among hobbyist internet communities or just special to our niche...

Far as I'm concerned, every good DTer likes to see GH alive and well. (And all the rest.) Otherwise, shudder, where will their users go?

Seriously though, GH is a crucial component of worldwide keyboard culture. I like what we do better, and how we go about it. But the web without GH is a poorer place. They'll be back.

Not to mention I sell most of my boards there... ;)

But after a week here, I dropped all the "geekwhack" and annoying tipster crap. I am more angry at why the site is down. :x

At this point, I'd just give up and rebrand the site. In addition to the new domain name, I'd keep the old one reserved to prevent little script kiddy cuntmuffins from obtaining it.
