I actually picked up one of these (keyboard assembly only) a few weeks back off an ebay auction. Here's what the keyboard module looks like.



Now that I've sipped the beamspring kool-aid, I have dreams of building a custom case for it. If I ever get around to tackling that, I'd like to somehow add in ctrl and alt keys for a proper bottom row. These keys would be some other switch type like cherry or alps, and would be part of the case (obviously I'm not making any modifications from this relic )

I seen that one. You are going to need a custom pcb if you ever want to use it. If you go with a custom pcb route you could also add a couple extra keys to the design but you would of course need two extra beamspring modules and you would need to have a couple holes drilled into the metal plate.

I can live without the bottom row but if the keyboard needs a custom PCB anyways just to work, that's a big bummer for me.

Like the 3277, the controller is integrated on the PCB, so there is no easy way to separate the controller and replace it with an XWhatsit. You would probably have to cut the traces and solder on jumper leads for the rows / columns.

You’re in for more work. I’d suggest DMA’s controller, which is more forgiving, and getting some practice in first on less valued PCBs!

The extra switches could be MX, though. If you can stand the clash in feel for the admittedly just as significant practicality gain in layout.

Oh well, I'm definitely up to the challenge and will be sure to make a workshop thread when the day comes to take this one on.

Hmm, how about using those beamspring keychain things, along with small PCBs with the appropriate pads, and handwire them up to the controller?

Unless you are able to interface with the existing controller from a power and protocol point of view you will either need to bypass the existing components or just make a new pcb which is definitely possible and could even be a mini group buy (I'd imagine < 5 in all). I don't think there is much sense in trying to modify an irreplaceable pcb especially when you start talking about adding additional keys. If you look up emdude's whatsit pcb project for 66 and 78 key beamers that should be a good starting place. I am currently working on my own pcb based on this. Also _Red made a Commonsense compatible pcb for the 3741.

No idea what it is but it looks nice. That missing cap is a shame though.

I remember seeing a bunch of those keyboards (without the monitor) on taobao quite cheaply a while back. They might still be around.

Vintage Fortune Systems 32:16 Keyboard - I bought one just like it from the same seller yesterday but this one is a bit more money. Nice one looks super clean though and has the overlay.
