Go to newest post broken

What I experience really is just the page loading 'wrongly' (i.e. afaik it's loaded images that make me end up at a post somewhere higher up than intended; the adressbar shows where I should be, clicking there and hitting enter makes me go there).
Webwit, any new insights on what Icarium may be experiencing?
We cannot fix that easily as images can be external, so their size is unknown.
What we can try is to make the page scroll after all the images are loaded.

Which is not ideal either, even now pages can take a while to load; during which I'll already be scrolling/reading. esp good fun with pics from certain asian sites, takes ages at times. If you wait to jump after such loadingtimes you'll surely disturb the browsing experience.

What might be good is if the entire page is loaded/rendered first, pic-'free' (small pics from the site itself next, avatars&smilies etc). This since someting else I experience at times is the page loading from top to bottom, in chunks; so holding down 'End' will get me to the bottom, continuously, 'till it's fully rendered and I hit the actual bottom.

Interesing problem this solution is.

Might be an idea to, at the time of posting, grab the dimensions of the image and insert those in the [img] tag or something.

Well, just to make this perfectly clear: These are two different problems. I end up on a completely wrong page. No amount of scrolling can fix that. ;)

Can you name a link you click on (the url when you hover over the link), the page you end up in (and specific url), the place you except to end up in.

Did so before in my 7th post on page 1. Will report again when I find another offending thread. Right now I have no unread posts.

Okay, here is one:
Link:
http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f= ... ead#unread
Where I end up:
http://deskthority.net/off-topic-f10/th ... tml#p44226
Where I would like to end up:
...well somewhere on the last page of that thread.

That's the icon to go to the first unread post not the last post, so this could be right?

by Icarium
Well, not unless I have to specifically have to mark them as read. I end up there even if I revisit the same link.

Ok, I've managed to reproduce it.
Firefox does seem to cache the redirect. So you end up at a previous last post position.
Hmm, maybe adding some random string to the first url will fix it... or expiry/cache control headers.

Depending on the kind of redirect you're using that is either a bug with Firefox or with all the other browsers. :)

Thanks for investigating!

Any news on that? If you have access to webserver logs I would love to help you create some that show the problem. I can look into fixes myself then.

For the first 5 secs, but rest is good anyhow.

Cereal though, what happen?!
Now when I click on thread titles in 'view your posts' they no longer link to unread or latest or nothing, just the plain OP. Icon does still go to unread though.
*edit: maybe I'm mistaken and the titles in 'view your posts' actually never went to the last unread
to make that up, have one more:

I think it works! :)
What did you do?

Posted: 28 Apr 2012, 13:22

I added some aggressive expiry/anti cache control headers to the 301 redirect.

Hm..sorry doesn't work. :/

I thought it did but apparently what you changed just made it work once. Sorry.

Maybe old redirects still in your cache?

I've been doing some reading, and you might want to switch to a 302 redirect: http://stackoverflow.com/a/6982825 - a 301 is cached by default whereas a 302 shouldn't.

Please test now, clear your cache first

It looks to me like the "mark forum as read" function in tapatalk breaks it...
(Not sure if old news)

Ah TapaTalk. Is that "sent by" thing allowed here?

: )

Edit. nvm, found the answer...

Most good threads get resolved loooong before they end.

Damn. I need to read these threads all the way through.

I have NOTHING TO DO with the current situation at the place that must not be named.

Nice! Then how about that secondary issue, images not having their height saved in the filename so you get dumped at a higher spot on the page when it's finally loaded?

It is still kinda broken.

If I click on "First unread post" and this post happens to be on the same page (page 1), the link just redirects me to the home page.
