I thought it might be cool but from the reviews it seems to be pretty crappy and do nothing but inform you about PMs.

Not sure how many people use this feature but in the 'Who Is Online' section, is it possible to be able to filter out all the web crawlers?

I agree it's a strange phpBB feature. On the other hand our stats are much more accurate than other forums, where, if the google bot is coming from 10 ip numbers, they show it as 10 guests.
I've investigated this earlier, and the easiest way to at least not list them would be to make the bots invisible members in the same way as you can make yourself invisible on that list.

How about adding [BOUGHT] category to Marketplace?

Quoting fails. Partially.
As in, a post containing one quote shows up in Spy cleanly, i.e. none of the quoted text shows there; but a post containing (I think) a quote inside a quote will show the quoted text of the post containing the other post.. hard to explain clearly (I'll try to do that with an example), but clear when you see it.
i.e.:
Code: Select all
new_post_by_off:
quote=soarer
text_by_soarer
quote=off
old_text_by_off
/quote
/quote
new_text_by_off
Would show up in spy as "text_by_soarer new_text_by_off".
Indeed. That quirk frequently gives me a deja vu feeling!!
But that's not why I came to this thread...
Spy shows the categories of a post (e.g. "Wanted"). Could 'View unanswered/unread/new posts' be made to show them too?

+1 It will be a most powerful tool if it could be made.

Suggestion:
A sub-board for Keyboard Layouts and Software
Lots of interest in Dvorak and Colemak amongst keyboard enthusiasts. Would be nice to have a dedicated subforum. The "Software" part would encompass things such as text expanding software, mouse cursor via 10-key, one-handed typing layouts, layout-switching aids, etc.
Thoughts?

May I suggest a Korean language sub forum? Kbdmania has an English forum, thought it would be nice to return the favour... (I'm aware that a lot of members here have English as a second language). Plus the Korean's seem to have to some cool stuff that they might want to trade...

Make a Korean language topic first, then if it overfloods, it can be promoted to a subforum.

Sounds fair.

FYI, I'm glad to announce that 7bit has joined the deskthority admin team.

Congrats 7bit! I hope you didn't have plans to fill a room with wingnut caps to dive into like Scrooge McDuck.

Ideally, the hyperlink colours on the forum should be changed to contrasting colours compared to the text body of forum posts. I've just written a post where it's (unless you have absurdly good eyesight) completely impossible to spot an inline link to a wiki page. The post text and link text are virtually the same shade of dark grey.
The grey-on-grey style is too subtle!

Just a little thing. When browsing the forum in spanish there is a tagline, under deskthority logo, that stands: "dispositivos de entrada extraordinario". It should be "dispositivos de entrada extraordinarios" as first compound is plural.
Thank you.

Wiki links now have the same style as other links (dotted underline).

dank. There's also .postlink-local to be fixed — for some reason there are way too many link styles.

No postlink-local in the code base?
EDIT: Ah, found it.

Argh. Just realised that Firefox's Style panel doesn't support :visited state on links. That's why sometimes it appears to not work properly on links. (It's never worked right since they introduced it. However, it doesn't skewer the GC to death like Firebug did …)
The fact that local links (links within deskthority.net where phpBB omits the domain from the displayed text, showing only "wiki/…" or "deskthority-wiki-talk-f33/…") use .postlink-local is the reason why no customisations are are being applied there, either.

Suggestion:
Seperate marketplace forum for group buys and interest checks. Put those in the same section, but in a different section than individual sellers. I think it would reduce the clutter a bit. I'm sure this has been suggested already, but I like the idea.

Yes.
Or at least a different appearance, to improve consistency. The less [Manual Description Goes Here] that people have to put in their thread titles, the better.

Can someone please correct the typo on 'rip off' (ripp) on the main screen? I can't help but look at it every time I come here (which is often)
and it makes me so sad
Edit: Ahhh thanks

i would love it if the "Spy" would also update the number of new messages you got as pm and would automatically update the "new event" thingy like google mail does if you have a new mail.
not sure how they do it but it would make the deskthority spy mode be more usefull as pinned tab.
also nice would be something like tokytoshos "last visited" indicator red line - but i guess that's not possible without some actual site interaction
anyways, love the site

hahaha, well - it's merely a suggestion(i'm sorry i didn't even bother to search the suggestions if there existed something similar before) - if noone has the time to do it; well that's life!

Warning: iPad user. Please skip if suggestions for "mobile" rub you the wrong way.
A couple of ideas to make iPad and iPhone browsing a bit easier here:
- Separate the delete post and edit post buttons a bit further. I edit continuously (writer's habit) and hit the wrong one quite a bit. Thankfully there is a warning, so it's not destructive. Just annoying. Don't think I've ever actually wanted to delete a post yet!
- Arrange skip to thread page buttons further from the thread title in index views. A full line title is a much bigger touch target than the page skips that are currently snuggled in right under it. In fact is there a need for any of them in the index other than skip to last page?
I can annotate some screenshots later if I'm not being clear. But it'll have to wait until I'm at home. iOS is how I use this site at least half the time. These niggles probably affect all touch driven browsers. Nothing big though, overall DT's a good site for browsing by tablet.

Screw apps! This is the web! Besides, I'm suggesting changes that could help any weird touch platform out there (Windows Phone 8?) hopefully at no cost. Other than Webwit's checklist…
The real web is what I'm always after. On my iPod touch I have a user agent spoof set up in another browser (iCab) just to avoid WPTouch, the Wordpress theme from hell that's the bane of my touchscreen Internet even after all these years. Used to be everywhere back in 2007-2010. Nightmares!
Here follows a rant about a formerly highly popular Wordpress plugin. Nothing to do with DT. Move along now…

Top 1 reason not to install WPTouch in your Wordpress blog: it is a piece of sublimely intricate pure unadulterated evil! Try reading that on a 3.5" display, with my eyes. Zoom disabled. Text size adjust at end of page (wrong) and reset between sessions (WRONG), then sprinkle on some extra hate by
shrinking the text in landscape view too!
If I could find them, I would burn their house to the ground. Fortunately, time moved on and "custom" "mobile" "
friendly" (my teeth are grinding as I type this) UIs are going the way of the Dodo. But unlike the hapless bird, it was all their fault. Dancing on your grave, WPTouch!

Ooo, an iCab user. Never tried the modern mobile version (no mobile of any kind) but it its day, iCab blew everything else on the planet out of the water for the level of control and features you had available. It was many years before Firefox caught up, and in many ways it never has, and I doubt anything ever quite will, notwithstanding the fact that it was not extensible. (A nerd's browser for a non-nerd platform …)
Posted: 17 Jun 2013, 23:58
by Muirium
Exactly. iCab's preferences on iOS look like an interdimensional rift has opened up to goodness knows where else. So… many… preferences. What is this, an IDE? But wherever it is, it makes more sense to me than Firefox on OS X!
It's not the most iPad-like of apps, but you can configure its interface six ways from Sherlock and tweak so much under the hood that its a good place to go when I need to get my tinkering nerd on. Oh sweet OCD! An app's a helpful target compared to buying an Android, a Blackberry or whatever tablet you can really break the best these days.
