My only complaint then is the scroll wheel. Seems like it would add a bunch of complexity to the design for minimal gain.

While you're at it reducing the complexity you might consider dropping the mouse buttons altogether.
I implemented an automatic temporary mouse-mode in my designs that activates when the trackpoint is used and remaps the three mouse buttons plus an additional scroll-wheel switch to the left hand homerow (ARST in above layout) as well as under the right thumb.

Very convenient and with a short-enough timeout also usable without any issues. Gotta love them trackpoints :-)

I prefer dedicated mouse buttons and scroll wheel. A scroll wheel scrolls better than pressing keys or track point, just like swiping a touch screen for scroll works better than having to tap a virtual button. Also I don't want to touch the track point, in order to use the mouse button and scroll wheel. I think it will also lead to unintended key presses, and certain problematic situations where you want to use the normal keys and press a mouse button at the same time. Personally, I'm not looking to reduce complexity of the design. Plenty of standard keyboards to choose from.

I have not read the entire thread so perhaps this came up already, but a while ago I saw the Ducky V2 groupbuy and I thought it was great that it had a pcb with holes for cherry MX switches as well as for Alps; also it came with two plates, one for cherry, one for Alps.

Would it be an option to have at least the PCB accept both kinds of switches ?

This is possible, but only with PCBs where there is no alternative position for switches.

The qHACK will come with Alps mount points, same for the big Hyper7 and if the HyperMicro is really realised it will also be available for both.

Why the 0.5x stagger in the HyperMicro? Why not standard stagger? I know it would ruin the symmetry of the layout, but 0.5x seems just too odd/off (from my naive point of view). Otherwise, I'm interested!

So, while GeekHack has an IC thread for a poker-compatible ALPs PCB, I'm suddenly worried it might be falling through so I'm piping up here with the suggestion that the hypermini be seriously considered for ALPs / matias modifications.

After all what really sells well in a hobbyist market is new, and shiny. MX is old and boring, right? New hawtness is matias' switches. Or something.

Anyway: expressing interest, albeit more reserved interest than many here.

I've re-thought the Hyper7 and came to the following solution:

The front is on the right and the rear is on the left.

Using sphericals on a flat 8-row design leads to the problem that the last 3 rows are too low down and difficult to hit without touching the keys in front of them.

The 2-PCB-design has the advanatge that the keyboard can be shorter by at least 2 units, because the controller area and the traces leading to/from it can be below the 3 extra rows.

The angle of the 2nd PCB is at 20 degrees, so the angles of the key tops are:
33 27 20 13 7 0 -7 0

Now, that I know how to do it, I can draw the PCBs again ...

I might be a little late to the party, Is this project still a possibility to happen? I presume that 7bit is a bit busy at the moment with keycap group buys etc. (/me runs hands together thinking of his round 5 order).

I'm very interested in this, I would probably be boring and go for a poker 2 layout, but having soldered it together myself makes it _so_ much better, right? :-)
