None too shabby. (Translation from English into English: pretty!)

My own newest thing, some months ago, was a prezzie from my mum for keeping her company through the hospital stays. And actually very useful while in there. A fancy, shiny, Bluetooth, noise cancelling pair of Bose QC35s:

Nice sound. Superb battery. Blissful noise cancelling. I've been using the shit out of them, right enough.

Tada looks very nice indeed! I got myself a box:

My latest acquisition, finally got one of these gems or as my wife calls it "A new all time low":

Thanks a lot to kbdfr who brought my attention to this offer. It's ultra-NIB.

Nice, I have a Bose QC myself. The best noice-cancelling set I've owned.

Oh god you got the Schumi board. It's intesense alright. And yes your wife is right. :o :?

Hell yeaaaah the Schumi board. I'm not ashamed, he's a national hero! Just one step away from being a second David Hasselhoff.

And the keycaps are doubleshot except for the utterly useless bottom row. Thank god I got into the WoB modifier GB earlier this year and it might be shipped "soon"

I had considered buying it myself,
but I have to reduce rather than inflate my collection.
Interested in the HSV and the Hertha versions?

OK that is slightly disturbing, good thing I did not write that!

Don't compare Schumi to Hasselhoff Wodan, that's really mean. Schumi's younger brother is a loser though.

I got a good deal on this Videowriter with Brown Alps SKCM. Based on the seller's pics (scratchy case, looked dirty) I assumed the switches would be scratchy, but they are MINT. Can't believe my luck!

Just got a NIB G80-1000 HAD with (I think) vintage Blacks. The date-code says it is from 1992.

Aaaaand it's here, my first Model F. And now I get what all the fuss is about. I own several Model Ms and I guess I just figured how different could they be? Buckling spring versus buckling spring, same manufacturer - bigger flipper? Big whoop. Capacitive, sure, but what difference does that make anyway?

But after ten seconds of tappety-tap... it's a world of difference. The F feels *way* better. Crisper, feels more precise, sounds modern and clicky rather than oldschool typewritery-pingy (which is unexpected - others claim the F is way more pingy than the M? Maybe I shouldn't have tested it on my lap  ). I do *like* my Model Ms, but when I got my hands on a Model M for the first time in decades, I was somehow expecting it to feel - and sound - better.

But now I have an F.

I know it's just an XT, I know the layout is terrible, and I know I paid too much for it. Shut up. I have an F!

Especially when factoring in what you paid Berserkfan for what you thought would have been your first ever F :evilgeek:

Oh yeah, we could add $200 to the price in that case, but I wrote that off as a sunk cost months ago.

For the record: F**king assh*le scammer Berserkfan.

You can "soften" the space bar by disassembling the keyboard and then bending the space bar stabilizer wire.

Great, because we've all heard how easy and fun it is to reassemble Model F space bars  [/sarcasm]

(actually, thanks for the advice)

Even if F reassembly can be rather frustrating, the mod Wodan recommends is well worth the time investment.

Perhaps, but I suspect the only time I'll be taking that XT apart is the day I have an FSSK PCB in front of me ;-)

I had to re-assemble it like three times and still think the space bar is too stiff.

I actually did my first XT (re)assembly the other day, and found it nowhere near as troublesome as I expected after reading all the posts about it. I didn't even use any special tools. After I had to do it for a third time in one evening, I got careless and I did break a flipper "leg" when pressing the bottom plate down on the assembly, but luckily I had a spare.

Basically, all you need is a pack of binder clips ($1) and some electrical tape to put on them to make them softer and that's it. Just position the flipper as good as possible, and slowly press the plate over the assembly. If it doesn't sit properly, you will know immediately, but two or three tries and the flipper should just slot in. Then use binder clips to hold it together and then hammer the plate to sit properly with a soft-headed hammer, and that's that.

That's like saying "I know it's just a Porsche" :) Congrats!
Scarpia wrote: (...although Jesus Tap-dancing Christ, that space bar takes a lot of force to press!)
Yes it does! But, I found that after typing on it for a while I get quite used to it.

I also bought another F (AT) from someone in the community, as addition to my model F XT and a "blue switch" model F, which is still on the way to me.

Thats why IBM designed the XT to have a super heavy space bar , to weed out sissy bitches such as yourself :P

In all seriousness , people back then where made of harder stuff , coming from a mechanical typewriter that XT space bar is super lite.

I honestly find space bars too soft now , thats why they rattle so as its a huge piece of plastic on a tiny switch / spring.

I mean just listen to the space bar on the xt and compare it to the rattle fest that is the space bar on the 122F or even worse model M.

Put that space bar on a MX grey or NMB neon yellow and it feels way better than on the same weight as the rest of the board.

Cherry have many faults , but at least for the most part they still put stiffer switches on the space bar.

Woah man, harsh.

I actually used to write school assignments on a mechanical typewriter as a teenager (yeah, I was *that* kid), so I have no problem with long travel or heavy keys in and of themselves. It's the huge difference in weight between the space bar and everything else that makes the F XT feel wrong.

Besides, on every mechanical typewriter I ever used, the space bar was always the lightest key, since the carriage was spring-loaded and you didn't have to leverage a typebar - a mechanism which would often result in unwanted double or triple spacebar presses. So my guess is that those 1920s typist tough guys (who, let's be historically accurate, were mostly women) had strong finger action but delicate thumb-on-spacebar action. To them, the space bar on a Model F would have been not just annoying, but completely intolerable.

Also, "1920s typist tough guys" should be the official Deskthority Kraftwerk cover band.
