It's like watching a campfire. I can stare at that extrusion nozzle for ages without feeling bored.

I agree. It is pretty cool to watch and the sounds it makes is pretty cool too.
What are you making?

Right now I'm printing a small wrist rest from a Thingiverse file. Previous prints were a keychain, pumpkin, and Rust programming language logo.
The computer club I'm a part of said that more people should 3D print stuff, so I'm using filament like there's no tomorrow.

What is the can of hair spray for?

It helps the heated filament adhere to the plate (which is also heated).

Have you ever used filament made from recycled materials, or made your own recycled filament?

I've heard of doing so, but the computer club doesn't have the equipment for it.

Ahahaha. Yeah, I made that back when I was... 13? Went to visit a small kit aircraft manufacturing shop. They let me use their scrap aluminum to learn riveting, bending, and cutting; that was the result. Still have it in the basement.

Wow, the movements seem a lot more random than I expected. I can understand the mesmerizing part of the experience

Curved layers can result in some weird path decisions. Large rectilinear shapes are very smooth and fairly dull to watch, even once the honeycomb pattern starts printing.
