The number of any things of which a man might want more than one is limited by the WAF (Woman Acceptance Factor).
Unfortunately this value can vary a lot and is not necessarily stable.

Why not the eight-way arrow block as seen on the FK-9000, some Omnikeys, the Gateway 2000 Anykey, etc?

The KeyWarrior100 chip would not fit onto a board with the footprint of a Teensy, the LQFP100 package is simply too big. Also you would have to drop almost all functionality, it has about 80 signals.
But all the lines for the key matrix are on the connector to the left of the eval board, it is not ...

Is it hard to type over all those keys to reach the alphanumeric block?

This is not a layout for working with it, it is just a test setup. Though I have gotten requests from people who would like to have such a sea of keys to control stuff, like music ...

They did use CNC milling, but I have no idea how they treated it. These things did cost quite a bit, but the quality is really superb.

You are probably better off modifying the trackball to become USB native. Kick out the old stuff and put in a USB controller.

Found this one in our store. We had nothing to do with this one, just got it as a reference unit for some project.

So this one is an actual shorthand keyboard. But I have no idea how to use it…

The idea here was to type syllables, the position of the key blocks is somewhat related to the position of the letter in the syllable. The algorithm turning this into useful words was the part that got a patent.

Old project, we did make the controller chips for those.

It has no redundancy in it, just ruggedness, so it survives rough handling. You can literally drive a nail with it.

This thing was made by a customer of ours, if I remember it correct the price tag was just not three digits any more (direction upwards…).

What you said about the USB HID protocol and the buttons is interesting. I didn't know that. Thanks! I need to look into how I can make it so software can recognize the buttons as specific controller ones (although maybe that is not needed?).
