Thanks for your support thefarside. My interest check for this is because the current ownership is expected to end quite soon according to their own statements and outside of someone outright buying it or gathering funds, the next owners are not obliged to keep the site running in its current form ...

Re: Desoldering bent switchplate legs. [Alps switches]
I've had better luck (fewer broken pins and lifted traces) by bending the pins straight while the solder is melted before removing the switch from the board:

[WTB] 6u PBT space bars in MT3 profile
Specifically, I'm after one or more of the following:
• the 6u bar kit (or either of the two bars from it) from /dev/tty
• the red or blue bars from the 6u bar kit from MT3 Godspeed
Anybody in here able to help me out?

Re: Unicomp PS/2 controller quirk (New Model M)
This can of course be worked around by just using Ctrl + Scroll Lock instead, which is the legacy (PC/XT/AT) way of performing a Break.
I have this problem with my Unicomp Classic 104 White Buckling Spring PS2 (with 103 key option), purchased in 2020, and it has been driving me nuts. Thank you ...

Cut down again, with one addition (one I thought I'd already listed but apparently hadn't: the Sun Type 3).

Re: Topre Ivory or Black/Black?
I have the black on black caps from one of my RealForce boards and personally, I think they're terrible, but it isn't just because it's kind of hard to see the legends (which for me is mostly irrelevant because I don't look at legends when I'm using a keyboard anyway; one of my most heavily used ...

Re: HHKB refresh in 2019?
I do have 2-3 sets of HHKB 45g domes laying around so I'll always have those to fall back on when my HHKBs approach binary-switch levels of tactility.
That won't necessarily help given that the domes changing is apparently a "rubber structurally hardening with age" thing and not a usage thing ...

I'm quite sure I've seen POS keyboards where some of the switches have been covered with some kind of "blanking" keycap, where that key is not in use… I must be getting the search terms wrong, because I can't find any examples. Does anyone know a) what Im talking about and b) where I might get ...

Significantly cut down the list because I've either got most of what I was after or decided I didn't want some of them for very specific reasons. For instance, I thought I'd want the ISO variants of the Apple stuff until I actually used a Mac and some of the ISO boards, at which point I realised how ...

So I'm wondering, surely it's not necessary for the water to be boiling, right? It's about delivering some heat, enough to clean the dirt off and melt the wax.
So for the ABS housings, anything under 100C should be ok? (iirc that's when it starts warping?)
So maybe a sous vide heater, set to like ...

Re: What happens when your "White Whale" disappoints?
That's really strange. I used to own both a Realforce and an HHKB and felt no difference due to the plate. Perhaps it had something to do with my setup. I still regret trading that HiPro, even if I got a sweet SSK out of the deal.
I've never tried a HiPro one but the HHKBs I've tried don't feel ...

Those things seem to be gold dust because they're MX compatible. Personally, I'm just going with Niz switches, and (I think) BKE Redux v1 domes, which are a frustrating match to assemble but theoretically pleasing to use.

I recently acquired an IBM 5576-001 . It sorta has 5 split space bars. One's really a caps lock key. Two are read as space bars in Windows 10 non-Japanese. I don't remember if the other two do anything, as the keyboard is currently on my bench and taken apart, I can't check. I'm really hoping I ...

I don't yet understand the naming difference between HHKB, Realforce, and Leopold. Looks like the Realforce KBs are the only ones available with 55g switches. I'm a fan of the R1 beige chassis. I was surprised how quick I adjusted to JIS and how slowly I'm getting used to the HHKB layout! That's one of the reasons why my HHKB ain't leaving my desk for another week or so.

And that specifically applies to 45 g Topre in a HHKB - the flex of the plastic chassis has a surprising impact on key feel.

If you are on ANSI, as Myoth says, using an International layout in the OS will help. Alternatively, just stick with your usual logical layout and the keyboard will still output most things as usual, regardless of the key legends. For example, there is a workaround built into UK layout for the lack ...
