If you have an original IBM black label modded by Phosphorglow, then you have a primo specimen which sets a high bar for comparison.

That is absolutely right. I actually have two such boards, and they are both excellent. You definitely get more than your money's worth from him.

but for a casual ...

1391401 Model M vs Unicomp Classic

I have a 1991 1391401 Phosphorglow Model M that lives at work, and a Unicomp Classic that lives at my home office. Recently I blanked the Unicomp. After using it at home for a while, I took it to work with me and swapped it for the M, just to see how well I could code on it.

The answer turned out ...

My post office uses Access-IS from what I can tell. (MX black, English Tipro.) But they use them behind armored glass so I haven't tried shooting a picture. In Scotland, Post Offices are occasionally robbed at gunpoint you see.

Imagine my eye rolling surprise when no post office is like that here ...

Order a black set plus the right shift in another color, and then order enough other modifiers in that same color to complete the board.

Or, wait for another blank black complete set to show up on ebay (there has been a few since Unicomp ran out of black right ...

Hear, hear! chzel, (or is it here, here!)

This seems like much ado about nothing, OP said " My feeling is that I'm only having to customize because they can't fill the order I would prefer to make, namely a fully black set, so they should eat the fee."

I'm emphasizing the my, I and they because ...

I've encountered this missing black Shift issue because of people wanting the black set in my GB. What I'm doing is buying the black set with the missing cap, and a single blank right Shift cap, which they can dye. Alternatively, buy a whole set in the same colour and dye all the caps together. You ...

Also, it's worth pointing out that it doesn't matter who's right: Unicomp have given you their terms, and since they have the monopoly it's tough shit if you disagree.

That's certainly true, but whether I decide to spend the $30 is going to depend at least partly on whether I feel right about the ...

Who's right, me or Unicomp? Opinions please.

I have a black Unicomp Ultra Classic that I want to put blank keycaps on. Ideally I'd like to use black caps, but the black blanks are gone from Unicomp's website, so I emailed them to ask. They say they don't have any more right-shift keys in black and I can substitute another color (gray, probably ...

~3 years ago I bought a Achieva Shimian 27" 2560x1440 IPS for 300$ shipped that has the same identical panel with the Apple Cinema Display which was ~1500$.

You can buy one now for ~200$ shipped (and this one overclocks to 120Hz as well) or for 500-700$ you can get a 39-49" 3840x2160 IPS monitor ...

I wish they would. The stock overlay is dreadful. It has the Unicomp logo on it that looks like it was created in Microsoft Paint.

Assuming both cables are using the same color coding, reversing green and white should work. If you want to test it ahead of time, get a meter and check continuity from connector to the contacts on the USB end.

I have had that happen on my laptop keyboard. It's usually the result of some sort of fatfinger tangle-up where I press too many keys at once. I can't reproduce it, but it always follows that kind of thing. What OS are you running?

Blank caps looking really nice. I just hate Unicomp's led overlay logo.

Edit- I wish they would make black and pebble versions mimicking the IBM original LED overlay.

You can buy that kind of overlay from Unicomp for restoring old IBM boards, but they won't work on the current production boards ...

I also typically use two monitors, but one is facing me while the other is off to the right. The one facing me is the active work window, whereas the one on the right contains the reference material I'm using to do the work. That's an oversimplification, of course, but it's mostly true. This is ...

If the caption is to be believed, this was a vision of the future from 1971:

Now, I know it's a typewriter, but look at the keyboard. It's an ergo board. In 1971. On a typewriter.

Blanked my Unicomp

Bought the blanks from Unicomp when I bought the board to save on shipping, just never got around to putting them on until tonight.

They're not super consistent about the colors of the stems:

Hi everyone, been reading for a while but this is my first post here, so I figured why not jump into the deep end and join this irresolvable debate. :)

I see three main arguments being made in favor of compact boards: desk space, right hand mouse position, and keeping your fingers on the home row ...
