So, I like using key/mouse for gaming, however I ABHOR using the "WASD" keys. As a result, I move the keyboard to my left and use the arrow keys and the associated keys surrounding them.

I would imagine it is analogous to "holding the Shift key down". Shift down = LETTERS UP, so that is inherently backward. Thus any arrow-derived representation of a lock for Shift will be backward with regard to one or the other.

I had the same problem with a game controller. The cable was wrapped around it and it sat in a drawer for a couple of years, leaving sticky channels with raised edges much like yours, only worse (because the cable was pulled tight). It's also worse because the damage is right there in my hands.
