If I use a non Tipro board, I use Autohotkey.

CapsLock = Return
the capslock key is so near to the left pinky, it is a pleasure to use it.

I can't live without this.

FN + Space = Backspace
that is something I always program with a Tipro keyboard

I J K L = arrow cluster
since I use a Trackpoint between HJN, I need an arrow cluster nearby

I use the unix cursor keys, control (capslock) plus a/e/p/n, They already work almost anywhere on a mac and all the linux servers I SSH into. I do have them mapped to arrow keys as well, for software that doesn't properly follow mac keyboard shortcuts.

The other thing I do is assign keys to my most commonly used apps. A single keypress takes me to my main browser window, my secondary browser, a terminal prompt, text editor, mp3 player, etc.

I also have control/capslock+space open the mac equivalent of the windows 8 start screen, which (just like windows) lets you type an abreviated app name and hit enter to lauch it.

On a mac the best remapping tool is "key remap for macbook" which is not just for macbooks. It's a kernel extension, and can remap things that would otherwise require custom hardware.

Currently, I use an IBM Model M keyboard connected to 3 computers using both hardware and software KM switching. The primary computer is running Mac OS X (10.8.4). One of the secondary computers is running Linux (Linux Mint 13 KDE) and the other is running Windows 7. The only layout change is CapsLock --> Command. I leave the Control and Alt keys as they are. This way, when I automatically switch to the Linux or Windows computers simply by moving the mouse cursor to the corresponding monitor using Synergy, the "Windows" or "Super" key is still the remapped CapsLock (Command) key. To do the remapping of CapsLock --> Command, I use the built-in utility in System Preferences on the Mac.
