Just got my HHKB v2 Pro Type-S in the mail today. Apart from being overall thrilled with the board, I was really, really surprised by how loud the left shift key is, in particular, with relation to the rest of the board. I also have a RF 87USW to compare it to and I must say that even the "loud" left shift of the Type-S is much quieter than the RF's unsilenced shift, backspace and enter keys.

Comparing either board to its un-silenced version is a bit like comparing granny smith and gala apples. Sure, they're both apples, and you'll find fans of both, but they feel, sound and taste completely different. This might be all in my head, but my fingers felt like the key travel on my non-silenced RF board is ever-so-slightly longer than its silenced step-brother.

Other than that, I'm happy to be here on deskthority for my first post. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Interesting you should say that. The left Shift on my HHKB Type-S here used to be quite loud, too. I've had the board about a year now, and, somewhere in that time, Shift stopped being such a black sheep and fell into line with the other keys. Can't say I know why. I haven't been inside this keyboard to swap in Hyper's rings or do anything hairy with lube.

Right now, my HHKB actually looks like this:

The orange Shift key is really for my Realforce. (I don't have a matching 1.75u right Shift for my HHKB.) But I thought I'd give it a try on the wee board I have with me, before I'm back home. Must say it's a nice, quiet cap. Like the red Control above it, the material feels a little different from regular HHKB caps. Hard to describe. I've no complaints at all about the sound. The spacebar is by far and away the odd one out on my board. That's a work in progress all itself. Its main noise is on topping out, so I'll go in there and install a ring when I'm not relying on it as my only board.

Anyway, I need to pop the HHKB's own Shift key back on to be able to tell you if the cap is what makes the difference. It might just be that I've "broken in" the HHKB by using it as one of my frontline keyboards this last year. I suspect so.
