password manager anyone?

I finally decided to update my password management situation. I've been using KeePassX now but I'd like a way to more easily share password with other PCs on the same network and with mobile devices. What do you use?

Requirements:
- no "cloud" shit
- multi platform (linux, win, mac, android, ios, ...)
- shared database but...
- ... the master can be just one machine (ie: editing happens just on my pc)
- decent browser plugin would be a plus but not terribly needed (chrome+firefox)

So far the best option I've seen is KeePass (not the "X" version) with keepasshttp... but it runs on mono on linux... there must be a better way.

Suggestions?

I take my KeyPassX datebase with me / copy it to every machine -even to my phone: KeePassDroid - Android needed some playing around because the keypass file needs to reside on the internal memory (not on the SD-card)

Just remember to only enter passwords on the master copy. I have not tried any merging.

I could use a shared folder but the point is that keypassx is not meant for shared database.

I use Keypass, distributing the key file (that seldom/never changes) by hand to my devices and having the encrypted password list file sync with the cloud (onedrive) regularly. Keypass and KeypassX use the same format for the password safe, so you can use KeypassX on your Linux boxes.

What I can't do is edit them at the same time on two devices, because only then I'll get a problem with syncing.

I tend to stick to Password Safe and make multiple backups keyed on date which I then sync around while keeping the older backups. Merging works but I just replace the database on each machine with the latest backup, that way the "Last modified" date should match on all machines.

It's a simple app, and there's a version for Linux as well as Windows. If all else fails, the Windows version works in Wine though the auto-type and password drag-and-drop features stop working.

Firefox has some built in cloud synced mechanism, as I recall.

Closed source: Yes.
No Linux: Right now, they are working on it
Cloud based: No. You can use Dropbox, but you aren't forced to. I use a USB Stick for work/home sync and at home i sync via wlan on my iPhone/Pad.

If you go for KeePass, use KeePass2. I used it before i bought 1Password and its pretty solid, although the browser integration isn't top notch. When i use 1Password i can save all new entrys right when i create and account. In KeePass2 i had to create them twice; once in Browser, once in KeePass2.

I'm exactly in your situation matt3o and tried KeePass2 after andrewjoy recommended it me. I was sceptical at first but I'm satisfied with it. Of course one has to be able to trust such a software to beginn with. I did some research on it before starting with it. Of course I still sandbox it, not that that will make any difference. A little paranoia is healthy.

enpass seems fine.

honestly a password manager that is closed source doesn't get much credit in my scale. I'm okay at paying whatever is needed but security and privacy software should be open.

I'm just a regular pleb and rely on iCloud for everything. Works flawlessly for me. And that way the feds don't need to kick up much fuss when they feel they need to peek into DT*. Slick!

I also use Keepass, and have it stored... on Google Drive, but I can access the file on all devices. I open the kdbx file with different applications on Linux, Mac OS, iOS, Android and Windows. I am using this 'setup' now for a very long time.

The master password is very long, and not all things are saved in the Keepass file correctly, I have to add or delete for critical things symbols to the password saved in the file.

Ah, I save some heavily used websites with the browser I am using, WHICH DOES NOT WORK FOR DT ALL THE TIME. Damn.

That's correct, but as long as you only edit and save instantly, it is somewhat OK. I even use a keepass file at work and share this file with coworkers.

What I hate sometimes - and that is why I really would like to know how to solve the DT problem (it is the only website where this problem appears for me) - that I am lazy (often) and just don't want to open the file because of laziness. That's why I am then not logged in somewhere until I am not lazy anymore

Does your browser ever actually forget your DT password, forcing you to type it in again? That's some hardcore 1990s shit!

DT very occasionally logs out on me. I have 3 clients logged in the whole time. One phone, two Macs. Wake / sleep is no problem. Indeed, I'm usually still logged in even after a software update. But once a month or so (whenever Webwit fiddles with the cookies because of you guys) I'll get logged out. Then I have to hit return, like an animal! My password is still there behind asterisks, obviously.

LastPass and 1Password are excellent. LastPass offers a very high functionality product for free.
