Old accessories on new machines

I just plugged in a Dell 745 with Windows 7 to use as a test machine, very pleased that it has a serial port for testing old mice and trackballs. Unfortunately, all it has is USB ports, no PS/2, and a lot of these old PS/2 keyboards do not work with simple adapters. Amazingly, the Cisco 600N wireless USB that I fished out of the scrap bucket works flawlessly, as does the Microsoft serial mouse. I wonder if I turn the PS/2 keyboards into serial if they will work? Or will it burn them out with a different voltage?

Well, so much for that computer. I plugged in an old trackball and it blew the motherboard. Now using an old Xp machine.
