IBM Model F (AT) - is this layout possible?

Hey guys,

as i think it's the time to get an Model F, and maybe the time will come, who knows, i thought about a better layout for me when thinking about an IBM Model F (AT).

Would something like that be possible in any way?

Here's the link to the layout.

So you would basically have a kind of normal mix of HHKB layout and TKL when the numpad is off, and a HHKB layout with numpad, a bit like a 15" notebook.

Would that be possible in any way?

I think it might be possible physically if you make shift and numlock into 1.5U and 1.25U but I'm not sure if there are pads under there.

I think that it's worse than that, scott. I think that the barrels are in the opposite position as compared to the image above. So, shift would be 1u and fn 1.75u...

Oh right, yeah, that's correct. Let me grab my AT to take a picture...

Everything apart from the right shift is possible. The two barrels under the right shift are indeed the other way round, so from the left the 1u barrel and then the 1.75u barrel.

Then i think my layout would be something like this, everything blank.

Now i only need to know how to do it, and if there are any special things needed, such as a Teensy or something like that, to program that layout in "hardware".
Or should i just remap every key via software? If via software, the keys would not work as intended in the bios and everything non-OS right?

Just wanted to chime in and let you know there is a pad under every barrel +2 extras under the ends of the space bar.

Short answer: yes, it should all be fine, and definitely use a Teensy.

Long answer: I did a lot of this myself just recently, here:

The AT's controller puts out strange codes for the hidden keys, like the one trapped behind big ass Enter. You're best to intercept those in hardware.

it would be better if you split that + on the num pad and put in a tab key , all the cool kids are doing it

If that numpad block was 3 units wide instead of 4, I wouldn't even waste the space with numbers! It's a navigation island.
